Get Creating

Pupils love to get creative with food and what better way to encourage them to eat a school lunch during NSMW than involving them in preparing it. During NSMW we want to show pupils that food and cooking is lots of fun and it's better and easier to learn to cook from a young age. Some children don't know where basic raw ingredients come from but teaching them to cook helps pupils learn skills for life. They will also understand the hard work that school caterers put in to create a delicious and healthy school meal.

Before you get started with your plans for Get Creative day have a chat with your headteacher and teachers about what cooking they already do in or after school and see if you can work together to create something different today.

Get pupils interested in cooking

  • Involve pupils in cooking a school meal

Ideas for Authorities

  • Do you have a local restaurant that would be interested in helping one of your schools? You could invite the head chef in to a school do a cooking demonstration and give a talk about cooking.
  • Or perhaps you could arrange for pupils to visit a local hotel so they can see another kitchen at work.
  • Encourage young people to design and decorate a menu that they would like served at lunchtime. The winning menu could be served at lunch and the creator could be invited to have lunch with the headteacher plus their best friends as a reward.
  • Ask your school cooks to organise a fruit and vegetable workshop in their school so pupils can see how different fruit and vegetables are prepared. Suggest some fruit and vegetables the pupils won't see on a daily basis.
  • Download and print the NSMW Recipe Guide so schools can give one to each child to take home and show their parents. This also includes advice for parents on healthy lifestyles.
  • Take pictures of dishes cooked today and upload them to Twitter. Use the hash tag #nsmw2011 so we can tweet them from @NSMW.
