Get Remembering

Get remembering day took place last year and was one of the most popular days to get involved with as schools and caterers recognised the importance of Remembrance Day. At 11am on 11th November millions of people will observe two minutes silence to think about those who have fought in wars past and present.

The aim is to create awareness of the day and educate young people about what school food was like during the war. School meals for all began in the 1940's during the Second World War and were introduced because young people were malnourished.

Ideas for Authorities

  • Invite people to go in to one of your schools and talk about their experiences in a conflict. You may have local camps or Territorial Army bases that would help.
  • Arrange to show the NSMW video with war hero, Simon Weston at lunchtime. This will be available on www.iloveschoolmeals.co.uk and www.facebook.com/nationalschoolmealsweek
  • Encourage your staff to dress up in costume from the 1940's.
  • Serve a typical school meal from the 1940s and explain to the pupils what it must have been like in the 1940s.
  • Decorate the dining room as if it was a street party to celebrate the end of the war.
  • Encourage children to understand the significance of the Poppy and either draw or make a poppy that they can wear. www.britishlegion.org.uk
