Get Travelling

National School Meals Week is going global as we want pupils to learn about food from around the world. We're focusing on five countries so you can organise a school lunch promotion around India, Mexico, China, Italy and the UK. You could run a themed menu in your authority with tasty treats for the pupils to try, decorate your school dining hall with flags, dress up in clothing from your chosen country and even play music whilst pupils eat. There's lots of downloads to help your schools promote their event including an assembly about food from other countries.

The day is supported by Bernard Matthews Foodservice and their Big Green Tick range of British turkey products. Schools in your area can enter their competition to win a Get Travelling Day as well as download their toolkit that includes activity placemats, posters, an educational Snap game, recipe cards and lots more. Find out more about the Bernard Matthews Foodservice range of British turkey products and the fantastic competition up for grabs at www.iloveschoolmeals.co.uk/bernardmatthews

Ideas for Authorities

  • Provide schools with flags or other materials to decorate their dining hall. Staff and pupils could dress up in costumes from the schools chosen country.
  • Use the recipes supplied by Bernard Matthews Foodservice to create turkey dishes from Mexico, India, China and Italy or cook a traditional British turkey roast.
  • Download and print the Bernard Matthews Foodservice Activity Sheet for schools to use as a place mat.
  • Pupils could create some music from one of the chosen countries in their music lesson or you could invite a local dance group in to do a themed dance.
  • Use the letter to headteachers and school councils in the general toolkit to tell them all about National School Meals Week and Get Travelling Day.
  • Ask pupils to write a blog about a country they have visited and send the links to nsmw@avfmarketing.co.uk so we can promote them.
